Public Tree Climbs

We host public tree climbs on weekends from March through November at our farm in Efland NC.  Usually climbs take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings on the second and fourth weekends of the month (see schedule below). We provide all the gear you need to safely get into the canopy for an unforgettable experience.

Climbs are open to participants ages 6 and up.  Public climbs are $25 per climber for a 60 minute climb and you are welcome to stay afterwards to enjoy the giants swings, 240 foot zipline, trails, nature playscape, etc.

Although no experience is necessary to climb, a basic level of physical fitness is important.  If you can do 5 deep squats in a row, 5 complete situps in a row, and raise your hands above your head repeatedly, then I am confident that you will have the strength and flexibility to be able to climb. It actually doesn't take that much effort to climb, but folks who are carrying 30 extra pounds or more may struggle significantly.

Contact me if you want to schedule a private climb at Schönwald outside of these dates/times.  Scroll below the booking scheduler to see pictures and read more details about Schönwald.

Here is our cancellation and rain policy: If you need to reschedule or cancel your climb, you can do so up to a week before the climb at no cost. If you need to cancel or reschedule between 1 and 6 days before the climb, half of the cost of the climb will be refunded. Sorry, we can't provide a refund for no-shows or day-of-climb cancellations.

If I cancel the climb due to inclement weather or other reason, I will do everything I can to reschedule you for another climb that works in your schedule so that you don't miss out on a great opportunity. If we can't find a time to reschedule you, then we will give you a full refund. We will generally climb in a light rain if it is not also too cold, but climbs will be cancelled for heavy rain or if thunder is heard.

We also offer Private Climb Experiences for individuals, birthday parties, groups, schools, businesses - anyone who wants to climb!

We hold most of our climbs at 3 beautiful locations.
Get to know each one of our magnificent climbing trees below:

"Alba" the White Oak.  Alba is one of the heritage trees at Schönwald, a privately owned farm near Efland NC where we hold climbs.  Schönwald is German for "Beautiful Forest", an apt name for this forest full of majestic oak, hickory and tulip trees.  Other attractions your group can enjoy while you are at Schönwald include a 240 foot zipline, 4 giant tree swings, nature trails crisscrossing acres of hardwood forest, a giant seesaw, horseshoe toss, lots of yard games, and a trampoline!  You are welcome to stay after your climbing session to enjoy the extra amenities.

Alba's Stats:
Genus and Species: Quercus alba
Height: 78 feet tall
Average Crown Spread: 107 feet
Trunk Circumference: 11 feet, 8 inches
Address: 4642 Rocky Branch Lane, Mebane, NC 27302

Twin Willow Oaks at JC Raulston Arboretum.  Two to three times per year we offer public climbs at the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh. The as yet unnamed trees that we use for these climbs overlook the beautiful grounds of the arboretum. It's not at all uncommon for climbers to look down upon photo shoots of bridal showers or young families.

Twins' Stats:
Genus and Species: Quercus phellos
Height: 105 and 100 feet tall
Combined Crown Spread: 170 feet
Trunk Circumference: 11 feet, 5 inches and 10 feet 9 inches
Address: 4415 Beryl Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606

"Karo" the Pecan Tree.  Karo lives in the heart of downtown Hillsborough a stones throw from the historic courthouse, the district attorney's office, the Eno River, Weaver Street Market, and the Hillsborough Farmer's Market.  This park, now called River Park, was once a bustling neighborhood. The tree line of the main road is still visible and many a child and adult undoubtedly gathered pecans from beneath Karo's crown for holiday pies and other treats.

Karo's Stats:
Genus and Species: Carya illinoinensis
Height: 108 feet tall
Average Crown Spread: 117 feet
Trunk Circumference: 12 feet, 6 inches
